Mod without rights

Good evening,

I would like to make a mod about the war of the ring.

I've got lot of idea but before starting to work on it I would like to know if it's possible because of the authors rights.

A mod is a fan's work...as long as you do it as a tribute and do not make profit out of it, this is OK. In theory a modder should ask "permission", if only by courtesy, to the author, but I guess in that case it won't be possible...;-)
